On our first trip to New Zealand we didn't get the opportunity to cruise Milford Sound. It was towards the end of winter, in August, when an avalanche closed Milford. Fortunately, the cruise company (Real Journeys) provided us the full refund. We planned our second trip December of the year after and it was the right decision to make. The weather in New Zealand is not always predictable, simply put, you may experience all seasons in one day. Milford Sound weather can be interesting as it displays some of the highest rain statistics. It may be sunny as you begin cruising but as you enter the rain forest you will likely experience high precipitation and dense fog.
Driving to Milford Sound
Although flights are available from Queenstown, driving gives the flexibility to stop and enjoy every moment of the journey with breathtaking views of waterfalls, creeks, mirror lake, mountains and lush green landscape. We drove from Queenstown to Te Anau couple days ahead of traveling to Milford Sound, giving ourselves a buffer for rainy weather. In case, you are also planning on Doubtful Sound cruise, Te Anau is a smart location as the cruise dock is 20 minutes from the town center. Early start to Milford Sound is recommended to avoid the tourist bus traffic peaking between 8 - 10 am.
